One Utrecht School of the Arts, five faculties
- Visual Arts and Design
- Music
- Theatre
- Art, Media & Technology
- Art and Economics
Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) is one of the largest institutes of higher education for art and culture. The school consists of five faculties, which together offer around 100 courses. Each faculty is different, but in many aspects each faculty is also clearly part of the HKU.
Each faculty has its own place (literally and metaphorically) and its own atmosphere, which is clearly recognisable in the faculty buildings.
One thing that characterises all the faculties is the exceptionally high level of the education. Each HKU teacher – in whatever faculty – is a highly driven expert in his or her specialist area.
And each faculty at the HKU has one important objective – to impart sufficient knowledge and experience to students to enable them to flourish in the world of art and culture.

The focus of the Editorial Design courses is directed towards providing tools for processing various layers of information and meaning, for mixing media and contexts from a range of sources, and for enhancing the connectivity of various forms of information.
At the same time, editorial design is not only concerned with design for publication media, but also looks at editorial structure in design processes and products in general. Thus, a variety of fields is implied such as urban signifying systems, database management systems, electronic display systems, information graphics, and web design.
In fact, editorial design could be characterized as the activity of making meaningful links.
Therefore, 21st-century Editorial Design requires a network of departments and disciplines.
The Master programme of Editorial Design is developed to create a multiplicity design attitude involving a variety of professional design skills as well as the capacity to participate in a topical Editorial Design discourse.

• Become a more professional editorial designer having a relevant education background both in China as well as abroad.
• Master relevant theories and skills, not only for private but also for public.
• Be capable of working for commercial companies, such as helping them build a stronger brand, image or identity system.
After all, my favourite major is Design such as Graphic design, Editorial design, etc. I always dream that I could have my own design studio in the future.
For many years I have been used to paying special attention to the layout of annual reports, websites, newsletters, advertisings from various companies. I often make some comparison afterwards, thinking about the relationship between the final design layout and the relevant background situation of the typical company, such as their company culture, public image, business scopes, etc. Keeping such a habit will bring me inspiration sometimes, learn good experience from others, and benefit me one way or another in my future study or working period.

Editorial and Typographic design are the main subject areas I would like to research, particularly in the fields of visual culture, communication, brand & styling, globalization, identity, and models of critical awareness.
• Find the most appropriate solutions of editorial design for different industries
Explores the role of the graphic designer in developing an appropriate communicative editorial design.
How an editorial designer could more exactly understand, interpret the text of each assigned editorial article, and then develop his/her own concepts about how the most suitable layout design should be, which best combine the content of the article with the professional use of typography, imagery and layout for editorial effect.
As an editorial designer, I will meet various customers engaged in different business domains. Considering their different demand, I must find the suitable solution with respect to words, sentences, paragraphs, images and so on. The most important point is how the designer could best accomplish the task according to his/her own concept and style, while at the same time the work also satisfy the customers as well.
• Find the differences and relations between the European and Chinese style in visual culture.
At this moment, a lot of cases often have somewhat international background. A designer might have to prepare two or three language versions for the layout of a project. Therefore it makes sense to study the differences and relations of visual culture between eastern and western styles.
